OPAAL is a registered charity with 142 member groups, which seeks to give the strategic lead in the development of independent advocacy for older people.

 OPAAL’s immediate aims are:
  • to promote independent advocacy with older people as a right
  • to contribute to the development of standards, including greatly improved access, and
  • to develop better practice in the field.
  • OPAAL works with advocacy schemes and alliances across the United Kingdom and involves a wide range of community development agencies and national and regional bodies alongside advocacy schemes in its membership and management committee.

OPAAL is working with its members to build the involvement of older people in the organisation and to develop its links with minority ethnic communities.

OPAAL is committed to evaluation and good practice and leads on several National Projects intended to benefit its members and the older people they work with.
